Very Reliable Coverage Study

During the course of the day, I tend to leave the television on Fox News Channel for background noise, kind of like some people leave the radio on.  It tends to be repetitive during the day, so I don't pay that much attention to it.  My two-year-old daughter and I just go about our business counting and coloring.

This morning, we were getting ready to go out shopping, and I had a replay of last night's Hannity and Colmes on.  They started talking about the polls that have come out recently on Obama and his trip.  My daughter turned to me and said, "Obama!"  I was floored.

I fast-forwarded to a part where they were talking about some McCain numbers, and I asked her, "McCain?"  She didn't respond.  They started talking about Obama again, and she yelled out gleefully, "Obama!"

So what does this tell us?  Since kids learn through repetition, I think Fox News Channel has been talking WAY too much about Obama!  And if FNC discusses him that much, then you can imagine what my daughter would be saying if I left it on MSNBC!

AP Slant

Most of the time, the AP decries labels.  They won't even call the Taliban "terrorists."  But they have no problem making sure everyone knows a corrupt senator is a Republican.

Yesterday, the AP put out a story about the indictment of Senator Ted Stevens with the headline, "GOP Senator accused of making false statements."  The story emphasizes the point by using "Republican" as the sixth word of the article.

But Democrats get different treatment.

The same AP put out another
story yesterday titled, "Ex-Newark mayor gets 27 months for corruption."

Since it came out of Jersey, I figured he was a Democrat.  At first glance, I didn't see the title in the story at all.  I went out and Googled him to find out that yes, he was a Democrat.  After re-reading the article, I saw it mentioned he was also a "Democratic state senator" in the sixth paragraph.

So here's the AP list:
Terrorist -- not OK
Democrat -- if negative story, OK only if you have to
Republican -- if negative story, print multiple times

Iraq is Back

Yea!  The IOC reversed its decision to ban the Iraqi delegation to Beijing.  The two eligible athletes were being held up by some technicalities over the Iraqi National Olympic Committee, which have been resolved during talks.  Five other athletes were going to go, but they were held up during this limbo and are now no longer eligible.

I'm glad to see the IOC take this step.  With that country in so much turmoil, it's good that the focus will be off the war and on the athletes for a few days.

Cali Quake Rant

So, SoCal had another earthquake today.  I think FNC has had only one commercial break for almost two hours of coverage, showing the same pictures over and over.  Why?  Nothing happened!

It wasn't a huge quake.  A couple of watermains broke, something was on fire briefly, and there were many aftershocks in the ten minutes after the event.  Are they waiting for some big building to crumble to the ground?  Maybe they are waiting for a triple-decker highway to collapse on itself.

They pulled in disaster "expert" Bobby Jindal (great man) because he's now governor of the Katrina state.  But he wasn't even in that office during the event.

Even funnier, Shep Smith kept telling everyone to stay off their cell phones while streaming video of one of the correspondents played while she was driving down the highway.  She was on her cell phone talking to Shep about what she was seeing (basically nothing).

I guess I'm bitter because I'm in part of the flyover country (we all know only NYC and LA matter).  Now, they're talking about how prepared LA is if the "big one" hits one day, because I think they are finally realizing that this isn't it.

Who cares!  Talk about Stevenson.  Talk about Caylee.   Heck, even talk about the breaking news about Shia not being at fault.  Anything else, please!

Fool Me Twice...

Five months ago (two years, eleven months in political memory equivalent years), I found myself defending Obama to people I know who believed some of the outrageous rumors and made some mythical leaps in order to bash the O.  I said there is PLENTY to hit Obama with on his political views that we don't need to resort to the low-blow punched that came with the rumors.

Then came "typical white person"-gate.  Well, it was more like a bump in the road.  I swore I would never defend the man again.  He made that statement with almost no question of him, and most have forgotten it.  Had he made a similar statement, McCain would have been run out of town and set on fire.  To be frank, that royally pissed me off, and I knew it would be a terrible thing for this country for that racist man to be our President.

Last week, however, I let my guard down.  Obama's prayer, which was removed from the prayer wall in Jerusalem, was printed by the Israeli, then American, press.  I blogged that I felt guilty for reading his private conversation with God, and I thought it shouldn't have been printed.

So of course, I got burned.  Obama leaked the damn note himself!  While his camp denies it was approved for publication, they don't dispute they sent a copy to the Israeli paper.  Why would you send a copy to a newspaper and not expect it to be printed?

Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me!  There won't be a third time.

Why Handouts Don't Work

"Give a man a fish, he eats for a day.  Teach a man to fish, he eats for life."

That's an old addage that rings true.  However, it should be amended.

"Give a man a fish, he eats for a day and expects you to give him another one tomorrow.  Teach a man to fish, he eats for life and doesn't bother you again."

Handouts don't work because they create an ongoing need and never solve the problem.  They have created this entitlement culture that society feeds upon and is found in every aspect of life now.  And most of those who live off the dole never learn how, nor do they have the drive, to remove themselves from the rolls.  I know -- I sqandered my opportunity to graduate college debt-free by running up credit cards during that time.  If I would have had to work to pay my college, I would not have put myself in that situation.

So here's the reason I'm writing this rant.  One of the couples who received one of those Extreme Makeover houses from ABC is now fighting foreclosure.  They were given a fantastic new 5,500 square-foot home with the mortgage being paid off by a local builder, who also gave them $100,000 in cash.  They were also given another $100,000 worth of furniture, home warranties, scholarships, and a car.  It was the largest home built at that time for the show.  They received the makeover because their septic tank would spew raw sewage into their home when it rained, and they had exhausted their savings in order to try to repair it.

Why would they be in foreclosure just 3 1/2 years later?  Because they took out a $450,000 second on the house just two years after receiving it!  They had no house payment, one car without a payment, scholarships for the kids, and they still managed to squander the gift.  They took out a loan to fund a construction business.  The husband already had a home security business.

I'm sorry, I just don't get it.  This was something so many others worked so hard to give them, and they just took it and gambled it away.  That's the handout mentality.  And as the numbers who voted in the Democratic primaries who, the number of people with that mentality is getting bigger and bigger every day.

So Wrong

While I am no fan of Obama and think this country would be in a world of hurt if he were elected at this time, what an Israeli newspaper did was wrong.  And I was wrong for clicking on the story.  But curiosity, unfortunately, got the best of me.

The Fox News Channel website is reporting that an Israeli newspaper published the contents of the note of prayer that Obama left in the cracks of the Western Wall in Jerusalem.  Another newspaper decided not to publish the prayer.  A Jewish seminary student removed the note.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I clicked on the link.  I was sure he wasn't going to ask for something like, "God, please make me POTUS."  But I had to know.  And he didn't.  And I felt bad for reading it.  So, if you want to read it, it can easily be found.  I'm not going to link it here, because it was an ordinary private note of prayer that no one should have read.

DNC's Gas

Here is yet another do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do Democrat moment.

DNC has been getting tax-free gas over the past four months while preparing for the convention in Denver.  They have been filling up at city pumps, avoiding the 40 cents in state and local taxes, for "safety and security reasons."  I can just see all of the Republican operatives following committee members around town waiting to put sugar in gas tanks when they fill up.  Whatever!

When questioned about the matter, an aide to Denver's mayor issued a statement that the committee would pay full market price for the gasoline, including the taxes.

I have a feeling, however, that they thought they wouldn't have to pay the taxes.  When confronted, a spokesman for the committee said they would pay "if the city feels that taxes are applicable."

The 47 Million Myth

Whenever I hear some number thrown out in the press, I find myself compelled to investigate.

Take the number of supposed uninsured Americans -- 47 million, including nine million children.  This has come up again and again during the election coverage and the call for universal healthcare.  Obama pledges these people will all be covered.

But who are they?

As Dick Morris correctly points out, the 47 million number includes about 10 million illegal aliens.  Obama, although he says he will cover all 47 million, also says he won't cover illegals.  Not sure where he actually stands, but let's say that there are actually 37 million uninsured Americans.

Now, out of the 37 million, how many are willingly uninsured, that is, make enough money to afford it?  Well, about nine million of these people make over $75,000 per year.  It might be difficult at that income level to have health insurance when you have to pay for cable and an SUV and the gas for that SUV, but that's the choice made.  That brings the number down to 28 million unwillingly uninsured.

In the income level of $50,000 - $74,999, there are another 8.5 million who are uninsured.  While they make more than the median household income of $48,200, it might be difficult for a couple making $50,000 living in one of those tax-you-to-death cities like New York City to afford healthcare, so I will give this group the benefit of the doubt.  These income levels are not adjusted for cost of living in different areas.

So we're still at 28 million.  That's less than 10% of the population.

During the S-CHIP debates, many sources quoted that six million of the nine million uninsured children in this number were eligible for current CHIP programs.  Six million!  That's six million kids whose parents had a resource for insurance coverage but did not take advantage of it.

That's 22 million left.  Who makes up this number?  It includes adults in the age range of 18 - 24.  Many are in college or at a first job, relatively healthy, and are uninsured by choice.  This number also includes people in between jobs who will likely get coverage as soon as another job is found, which is usually an average of four months without insurance.

How many are truly in need and can't afford coverage?  The Kaiser Family Foundation, a liberal non-profit organization, calls these people the chronically uninsured.  They make less than $50,000, have gone without insurance for two years or more, and are not eligible for government programs.  How many you ask?  They estimate between 8.2 and 13.9 million -- less than 5% of the population worst case scenario.

Think about that.  The Democrats want to move all 285 million Americans to a mandatory universal health care system to make sure that less than 5% of the whole has insurance.  With a mandatory system, fewer employers will bother having good coverage for employees when the government will provide adequate mandatory coverage that employers have to pay for with higher taxes anyway.  Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

The two reports I cited most are here and here, but there are SO many other resources that break down these numbers out there.

Pelosi Sends the Wrong Message

Nancy Pelosi today made this statement:

It is urgent that Congress send a message to the markets that we will act.

Guess what she was talking about.  Ha!  We can wish she was talking about oil.

No, she was referring to the passage and removed veto threat of the housing boondoggle, I mean bill.  A bill that should not have passed.  A bill that gives money to people who bit off more than they could chew because they were "keeping up with the Jonses."  A bill that gives more money to lenders who ignored paperwork requirements and lent money to people who could not afford the payments.  Both of these groups dug their own holes and should have to sleep in them when kicked out of their houses.

Why, Nan, wouldn't this same logic work with oil?  Send a message.  Open up drilling on the OCS.  I'm sure the market would respond.  Then, you would actually be helping all Americans whose only mistake was electing untrustworthy politicians who printed money to spend (on things like housing boondoggles), lowered the value of the dollar, relaxed speculation requirements, refused to permit refineries, encouraged people to buy big houses in the suburbs and double commutes, which all helped cause oil prices to skyrocket.

Fix the problem you actually caused.  Send the RIGHT message, Pelosi.

Fallen Heroes Memorial

Nancy Pelosi sent a memo to the Representatives that they needed to remove items from outside offices, such as recycle bins, furniture, trash, etc.  It is a hazard.

Rep. Walter Jones sent letter to Nancy Pelosi about memorials to fallen heroes.  He was sure she didn't mean these easels that he and other Representatives keep to remember the heroes from their districts who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  Rep. Jones will make this a battle of wills, as he will keep putting it up if it is removed.

Apparently, all Nancy Pelosi wants to clean up in Washington is the hallway.

Austin American-Statesman Loses Humor

Living in liberal Austin, I have no use for the local newspaper except to get the coupons each Sunday.

This past Sunday, I saw an article on the front page with a picture above it of Al and Nancy looking lovey-dovey.  Since article was front page, I didn't have to make much of an effort to read it, so I figured what the heck!
It was pretty funny, and it poked some fun at the lemmings. I figured this was the paper's effort at injecting a little humor into the craziness that was the Nutroots Nation.

Today, I read that the paper apologized for the article, and it was pulled from their website (the above link is the cached version).  Apparently, the nuts weren't happy with the article's mocking tone and complained.

Mexico is Passing the Peso

Mexico has decided they treat their illegals too harshly, so they passed a law that eliminates jail time for illegals caught within their borders.  Mexico says they want to be in a higher moral position to lobby the U.S.A. for better treatment of Mexican illegals in our country.

I think they got a two-fer on this one.  Not only do they get rid of that Conservative talking point that condemns Mexico for their harsh treatment of illegals while Mexico tries to get the U.S.A. to be more lenient, but they also alleviate the costs of jailing these people who are just on their way to our country anyway.

Way to pass the Peso!

Sanctioned Crimes

As far as I'm concerned, cities like San Francisco are sanctioning crimes.

In the wake of the terrible crime committed by a KNOWN illegal immigrant, San Francisco produces a PSA with TAXPAYER dollars admitting to being a sanctuary city, effectively welcoming illegals to help themselves to the city dole.

Danielle Bologna's husband, Tony, and two of her sons were killed by a gang member who was let off the hook by San Francisco because he claimed he was a juvenile.  Watch her terribly emotional interview on FNC this morning below.

Now, Mayor Newsom is welcoming more of those illegals to San Francisco with a public service announcement campaign, funded by taxpayers, that reassures them in many languages that city officials cannot deny them access to city services.  Here's one of the PSAs for you to enjoy.

As an American taxpayer, I want all federal funding to San Francisco cut off immediately.  They are breaking federal laws by giving federally-funded services to illegal aliens.  These law-breakers need to be stopped.  Now!  And money is the only way to do it.

Bias, Schmias

Of course there's no media bias.  No way.  Could NEVER happen.

First, the big three network anchors are traipsing across the world to follow Obama for his first visit to Afghanistan ever and his first to Iraq in almost three years.  He only went because he was called on it by McCain, who by the way has been on three foreign trips in the past four months with only one journalist in tow each time.  No bias there.

Now, Drudge is reporting that McCain's op-ed about the Iraq War has been rejected by the New York Times, which just a week ago published an op-ed piece by Obama about the same Iraq War.  Both pieces list some of the positives about the war to date, both highlight the negatives.  Both op-eds mention the rival candidate and how his plan will not work, and both show how each candidate will bring this war to an end.

However, the NYT Op-Ed editor, David Shipley, doesn't belive McCain's piece "mirrors" Obama's enough to warrant printing.  Mr. Shipley, it should be noted, served in the Clinton administration.  He has asked that McCain "re-work the draft" and resubmit his piece.  I'm sure Shipley meant he wants McCain to re-work the plan.

Read both pieces and tell me if you think they "mirror" each other.

Nope, there's no bias there at all!
